#BackToTheRoots is a beautifully conceived exhibition reflective of the various artists and art forms that come together seamlessly at The Continental Dance Club. Headlining the show is the work of photographer Angel Torres, who reveals the many layers and facets of Cuban culture so magically in his collection, #CubaLIBRE2019. The architecture, sculpture, politics, dance — and of course the colourful cars – of Cuba are all portrayed with love and reverence. Angel’s work is complemented by multimedia presentations featuring the culture and community that have been part of The Continental Dance Club’s collective her- and histories for more than 20 years, including archival photography and docu-videography by Joseph Pepelnak and Richard Fox. This thoughtful exhibition isn’t just for lovers of dance but for anyone who loves what’s possible when creators create together with their heart and soul. Thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended!
Additional program note:Attend the #BackToTheRoots Finissage event, May 26th (2-4 pm) and have the opportunity to view the #BackToTheRoots Women Authors Interview Series on video, featuring four women writers discussing their connection to the written word, dance and their creative lives; the communities they call home; and what it means to them personally to go #BackToTheRoots. Featured authors are Pollyanna Blanco (In Rhythm with Your Soul); Carolyn Boll (Social Dance: A Book of Ballroom Poetry); Joie Lamar, (Cuarenta y Nueve, the novel G and others); and Elizabeth Ruth (Matadora and others). The full interview series will also air online.
